This was our second year teaming up with BIG CITY WALLS, THE YOUNG WOMENS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL and THE SECRET GARDEN to do a workshop with the youth. Last year YOUNITY painted a mural at THE SECRET GARDEN and has since used the mural as a way to educate youth, promote the garden and the community. I introduced the girls to the mural and our theme”FRESHER”. They were asked to create their own sketch related to the same environmentally conscious theme. Each table then reviewed the sketches and melded the ideas into one final sketch that they transferred onto a large canvas. The canvases will be hung in the school’s cafeteria. We had a tour of the garden when they arrived by Kendall who spoke to the girls about sustainable living. This year the garden also implemented a composting station that is AMAZING. They have grown so much in resources since last year! It’s great to see these community gardens really making a difference in todays world and also willing to reach out and educate the youth.WE NEED MORE SPACES LIKE THIS!
THANKS to Tara, Caitlyn and all the staff counselors who make this workshop such a success. THANKS to Ms. Hansley who owns the garden, Joseph and Kendall from The Secret Garden- your work is cherished! AND last but not least THANKS to Emilia Wiles from Big City Walls who organizes these workshops with the great intention of consciously educating our youth! Without these workshops these kids would not be exposed to our arts culture and green spaces in NYC.
HAD A BLAST- looking forward to it next year!!!!
